Cluj-Napoca, Romania’s second-largest city, is home to around 400,000 residents and approximately 100,000 students enrolled across eight universities. Over the past years, it has emerged as a leading technology hub, hosting more than 20,000 software developers and over 200 IT companies. Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB), the oldest and largest university in Romania, serves around 49,000 students in multiple languages—including Romanian, Hungarian, German, English, and French—and is widely regarded as a top institution in Eastern Europe for computer science and mathematics.
As part of the European Software Project, international teams of 3–6 students tackle interdisciplinary software challenges with real-world impact. The program combines virtual teamwork with two intensive in-person exchange weeks-one in Cluj and one in Goslar-designed to strengthen team cohesion, promote cultural exchange, and accelerate project development. Working in this hybrid, cross-border format, students gain practical experience in agile development and artificial intelligence. The project exemplifies challenge-driven, project-based learning while fostering institutional collaboration.
This semester’s projects include:
- GTP4TuringTumble: Applying large language models to solve logic puzzles in the Turing Tumble board game
- SAPCAD: Creating a natural language interface for Building Information Modeling to democratize architectural design
- ExplainReality: Developing an explainable AI system to classify electronic waste using Meta Quest AR glasses
We extend our thanks to all participating students and teaching teams from Clausthal and Cluj for making this exciting initiative possible.
